The Kurdistan National Union (PUK) announced Sunday its candidate for the presidency of the Republic of Iraq.

"Our favorite candidate for the presidency is Mullah Bakhtiar, the official of the political bureau of the National Union, with another candidate, Latif Rachid," a party leader told The News.

"Today there will be a crucial meeting between the National Union and the Democratic Party, for the purpose of ending the file naming the President of the Republic of Iraq once and for all," said the leader, who asked not to be named.

On Sunday, the political bureau of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) held a meeting to discuss four "important" files.

"The Political Bureau of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan will discuss the role of Kurds in the House of Representatives and the candidate of the Kurds for the post of President of the Republic in addition to the formation of the new federal government, and will discuss the political preparations for the ongoing parliamentary elections of Kurdistan."
