Mortar rounds on the Green Zone in central Baghdad

In the first such attack in years

07/09/2018 - 02:16 Iraq

Three mortar shells landed in abandoned land in the fortified Green Zone in central Baghdad, the security information center said Friday.

"Three mortar shells landed on abandoned land inside the Green Zone in Baghdad without causing any casualties," the center said in a statement.

Adding that "the security forces embarked on a wide search in search of the perpetrators."

News websites reported shelling of the US embassy and other Green Zone headquarters with mortars followed by sirens.

It was the first such attack in years on the heavily guarded Green Zone, which houses parliament, government buildings and several foreign embassies.

The incident coincided with the escalation of protests against poor services in the oil-rich city of Basra in southern Iraq since last Monday and resulted in the deaths and injuries among the demonstrators.
