UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has appointed Janine Hennes Placert as head of the United Nations mission in Iraq (UNAMI), replacing Slovakian Jan Kubic.

A statement issued by the Spokesman for the Secretary-General, "Stefan Dugrick", that Jeanine Henness Placert will bring with her to the post "more than 20 years of political and diplomatic experience, having served in several high-level government and parliamentary positions."

According to the statement, she took over as Minister of Defense of the Netherlands (2012-2017), the first woman to be appointed to this position and was a member of the House of Representatives of the Netherlands (2010-2012) and a member of the European Parliament (2004-2010). She has also worked for the European Commission in Brussels, Riga, Latvia and Amsterdam.

Jan Kubic, a former foreign minister of Slovakia, took office in February 2015 by a decision of former Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

The spokesman's statement did not say when Dutch Ambassador Henness Placert would take office.

In his statement, the Secretary-General expressed his appreciation for the services of Jan Kubic.
