Iraqi Vice President Nuri al-Maliki told the Iranian ambassador in Baghdad Airj Masjedi that political forces continue consultations to form a strong government that meets the demands of Iraqis during a meeting of the two sides in Maliki's office in Baghdad.

"During the meeting, they discussed the latest developments in the political and security situation in the region and the world, and discussed the strengthening of bilateral relations in various fields," a statement from Maliki's office said.

According to the statement, al-Maliki "assured the Iranian ambassador that the national forces continue their consultations aimed at reaching a position that paves the way for a new phase of the political process towards forming a strong government that meets the demands of the Iraqi people."

On the US sanctions on Iran, Maliki "renewed his position rejecting economic sanctions imposed on the Iranian Muslim people," calling for "the international community to reject the policy of starvation imposed on the peoples."

The statement quoted Ambassador Masjedi as saying that "the Islamic Republic of Iran appreciates the positions of Vice President of the Republic of Iraq towards Iran and its people regionally and internationally."
