The US Embassy in Baghdad has expressed its support for the demands of Iraqi protesters, and expressed regret for the victims of the ranks of protesters and security forces.

"It supports the right of the Iraqi people to peacefully assemble and express their views," the statement said.

"We welcome the Iraqi government's statement that it protects the right of its citizens to demonstrate in a peaceful manner, and we regret the lives that have been lost between demonstrators and security forces," she said.

The US Embassy expressed its "readiness to support the Iraqi people and government in their efforts on economic reform and fighting corruption and in creating jobs and provide services that deserve the Iraqi people."

The Human Rights Commission said 13 demonstrators were killed and hundreds wounded during protests in several cities two weeks ago.

The number of wounded was 729, including 460 security forces and the rest of the demonstrators, it added.

The security forces arrested 757 demonstrators, most of whom were released during the past two days, and 91 government buildings, cars and cars were damaged as a result, the UNHCR said.

Since the beginning of this month, the central and southern governorates of Iraq have been witnessing protests calling for the provision of services such as electricity, drinking water and job creation, as well as the eradication of corruption.
