As the demonstrations against corruption and the deterioration of services in various parts of the central and southern governorates of Iraq continued for the ninth day in a row, the Iraqi government sought to contain the protests through arrests of demonstrators in parallel with promises of reforms and development allocations to the regions concerned.

The Office of the Prime Minister issued a directive to the security services to take "deterrent measures against the saboteurs and engineers in the popular demonstrations."

"There are two tracks under which the government is working, namely, seeking and responding seriously, promptly and immediately to part of the demands of the demonstrators, and also working through other tracks in the medium term," said Saad al-Hadithi, a spokesman for the office.

"There are other demands that need time and significant financial allocations, and this government endeavor for positive interaction was manifested through the decisions of the Council of Ministers at its last meeting and the formation of a ministerial committee was given powers to go to Basra and search to resolve the problems related to the demands of citizens.

Despite relatively low protests in the streets of Basra, demonstrations in front of the oil and gas fields continued, although they did not affect production.

The commander of the operations of the Middle Euphrates responsible for Karbala, Najaf, Babil and Diwaniyah, Lieutenant General Qais Khalaf al-Muhammadawi, the arrest of "exiled from outside the provinces," which is witnessing demonstrations against poor services and unemployment.

"All military units are working to protect demonstrators demanding legitimate rights," he said, calling on officials "to study the demands seriously and work to meet what is easier."

The Muthanna police command announced the arrest of 65 people described as "rioters and accused of burning government departments and party headquarters during demonstrations in the province," the day before yesterday, pointing to the seizure of weapons in possession of some of them.
