The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) announced on Tuesday that it is implementing an EU-funded project aimed at increasing incomes of families living on the Nineveh plain west of Mosul.

"The project is part of FAO's recovery and resilience program, which contributes to reducing acute or chronic food insecurity, malnutrition and poverty," said Fadel al-Zoubi, FAO Representative in Iraq. And all associated risks and vulnerabilities in the Iraqi agricultural sector. "

"The EU immediately responded to the urgent needs of the most conflict-affected families in the northern parts of Iraq," he said. "With the support of the European Union, families will be able to withstand resilience by increasing their net profits."

"Cash for work" to improve access to water

"Through the activities of the cash-for-work program, 1,250 families will be able to earn income, benefiting about 7,500 people directly," he said. "The results of this work will enable farmers to access the water needed to irrigate crops and livestock, Through the rehabilitation and construction of watersheds, roads, river dams and subways. "

"Once the important agricultural assets and irrigation infrastructure are restored, the project will provide water to 70,000 hectares of currently unproductive land that can be used to grow winter wheat crops, which means that 30,000 vulnerable agricultural households will be able to produce food on their land again, .

Many of the families involved in the cash-for-work side of the program do not have any other source of income. The program participants are women and other marginalized groups and benefit from the work of the community as well as individuals and families.
