The United Nations Security Council unanimously approved a resolution extending UNAMI's mandate to Iraq until May 31, 2019.

The Council's decision, drafted by the United States of America before the end of the current mandate for UNAMI, was more than one month (it was due to expire On July 31) because of Washington's desire for early adoption of the state in anticipation of a possible escalation in the political tensions that ensued after the parliamentary elections on May 12.

The resolution No. 2421 stated "the intention of the Security Council to review the mandate of the Mission by 31 May 2019 or earlier in the event of a request by the Government of Iraq."

The resolution also requested the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterich, to "report to the members of the Council every three months on the progress made towards the fulfillment of all the tasks of the Mission."

UNAMI, whose mandate is renewed by the Security Council in July each year, is a political mission established by UN Security Council Resolution 1500 of 2003.

UNAMI provides advice and assistance to the Government and people of Iraq in several areas, including the promotion of dialogue Comprehensive political and national reconciliation, assistance in the electoral process and national census planning, facilitating regional dialogue between Iraq and its neighbors, strengthening human rights protection, judicial and legal reform, as well as working with government partners and civil society to coordinate humanitarian and development efforts.
