Russian President Vladimir Putin said during the G-20 summit held in the coastal city of Antalya that Russia has been presented with evidence that individual businessmen from 40 countries, including from member states of the G-20, were financing the activities of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).
"I provided examples based on our data on the financing of different Islamic State [of Iraq and the Levant] units by private individuals in various countries. The financing comes from 40 countries, as we established, including some G-20 members," Putin told journalists during the summit's last day in Antalya on Monday.
The Russian president reportedly said that the fight against terrorism was a key topic at the summit.
"This topic was crucial. Especially after the Paris tragedy, we all understand that the means of financing terrorism should be severed," Putin said.
“I've demonstrated the pictures from space to our colleagues, which clearly show the true size of the illegal trade of oil and petroleum products market. Car convoys stretching for dozens of kilometers, going beyond the horizon when seen from a height of 4,000-5,000 meters," Putin was quoted as telling reporters after the summit.
Underlining that a united international effort is needed against ISIL, Putin said now was not the time to try and figure out which countries are more and which are less effective in the battle against ISIL.
Putin says Russia ready to support Syrian opposition in fight with ISIL
During a press conference on the sidelines of the G-20 summit on Monday, Putin said Russia was ready to support Syria's opposition with air strikes in their fight against ISIL. "Some armed opposition groups consider it possible to begin active operations against ISIL with Russia's support. And we are ready to provide such support from the air. If it happens it could become a good basis for the subsequent work on a political settlement,” he said.
Putin added that Russia needs support from the US, European nations, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Iran in order to support Syrian opposition groups against ISIL. "We need to organize work specifically concentrated on the prevention of terrorist attacks and tackling terrorism on a global scale. We offered to cooperate [with the US] in anti-ISIL efforts. Unfortunately, our American partners refused. They just sent a written note that said, ‘We reject your offer',” Putin said.
Putin underlined that it should be decided which groups in Syria can be considered terrorist organizations and which can be said to be an armed but still legitimate part of the Syrian opposition. He further added that Russia had established contacts with the Syrian opposition on the battlefield, which had asked them to conduct air strikes.
The Russian president also disagreed with Western criticism of Russia's actions in Syria, where the country has been carrying out a large-scale air campaign against ISIL and other terrorist groups since Sept. 30 in cooperation with the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
