UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Sunday ~ underscores importance of interfaith dialogue

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon
DOHA, Dec 11 (KUNA) -- UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Sunday underscored the importance of interfaith dialogue in promoting tolerance and peaceful co-existence among followers of different faiths.
"When terrorists kill innocent people, when politicians stir hatred and exploit stereotypes to win votes, when moderate voices are struggling to be heard in the politics of polarization, the Alliance's global efforts become very important," Ban said at the fourth UN Alliance of Civilizations Forum, which opened here Sunday.
"We must bring peace and tolerance in places that only know division and discord," he said, adding that the Alliance is working to solve this problem.
The UN chief, furthermore, underlined the role of Alliance of Civilizations in implementing empowerment of women and youth; promoting dialogue and mutual understanding to solve conflicts; helping nations in transition and maintaining sustainable development.
Alliance is an integral part of these five generational opportunities to decisively shape the future for decades to come, explained Ban, who stressed on the importance of expanding the youth network and having dialogue with them.
He stressed the importance of implementing women's and children's health and educational programs. The second imperative is preventing conflict and violence by promoting dialogue, he continued. On the third imperative of building a safer and more secure world, the UN Chief underlined the importance of mutual understanding to solve conflicts.
The fourth priority, he said is helping nations in transition, particularly across the Middle East and North Africa, emphasizing on the considerable role of Alliance to help these nations to shape their future.
On the fifth imperative, which is the sustainable development, Ban said no sustainable development could be achieved without boosting human rights and strong bonds among all people. Achieving these goals requires the participation of all, he said, calling on the Forum''s participants to lead a comprehensive dialogue.
In his message to the forum, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan urged an end to the bloodshed in the Middle East, adding that people in this troubled region are yearning for peace, justice and stability.
Meanwhile, Austrian President Heinz Fischer hailed the role played by the forum since its foundation.
German President Christian Wulff, for his part, said global challenges required the establishment of an alliance between civilizations to contribute to peace and stability.
He called for giving more space for freedom of expression, exchange of views and allowing competitions between ideas.
"No one should claim that he has the right to ban people from expressing their freedom," he said.
He said people have the right to follow the religion they wanted. "Islam is part of Germany and we should be partners, and should give Christians their rights, people have to practice their religious rituals as part of their identity, and we should not determine the identity of people according to their religion." Wulff told the conferees that "I assure you that what gather us is more than what divide us ... ." UN High Representative for the Alliance of Civilizations Jorge Sampaio said the agenda of the forum was in favor of development, dialogue and fighting against extremism.
Sampaio the forum was being held at a crucial time amidst "historic" events taking place in the Arab region, which showed that democracy was the sold way to enforce prosperity and stability.
The forum helps cement the interfaith dialogue that it turn helps the world address the great challenges it faces.
The United Nations Alliance of Civilization (UNAOC) was established in 2005, at the initiative of the Governments of Spain and Turkey, under the auspices of the United Nations.
It aims to improve understanding and cooperative relations among nations and peoples across cultures and religions. It also helps to counter the forces that fuel polarization and extremism.
The opening ceremony was attended by heads of state, prime ministers, ministers, secretary generals of the United Nations, Arab League, the Organization of the Islamic Cooperation besides a number of Sheikhs, members of diplomatic corps, high-ranking officials.
Kuwait is represented by the Representative of His Highness the Amir, Prime Minister Sheikh Jaber Al-Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabah.
