ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Islamic State (ISIS) militants overran three Kurdish army bases south of Makhmour township in an overnight attack Sunday, only to be pushed back hours later by Peshmerga forces, Kurdish officials told Rudaw.

“The militants seized three villages along with the Kurdish military bases, but Peshmerga forces countered the attack and recaptured the lost area before dawn this morning,” an official at the Peshmerga ministry said.

He said the …

A Kurdish officer said 20 Grad missiles had been launched into Mosul on Friday after receiving information that IS militants were gathering to meet near the city's Zuhour neighborhood.

"We hit their positions," said Captain Shivan Ahmed, who belongs to the unit that fired the rockets from around 20 kilometres …

Just like any Middle Eastern leader, Islamic State (IS) leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi (Ibrahim al-Badri) relies upon his relatives to guarantee his own security. However, ever since his spectacular appearance in the Mosul mosque in July, he has been missing a great deal of freedom of movement, which has prompted him to resort to traditional ways to camouflage his whereabouts. Meanwhile, the new generation of leaders in …

After the US invasion of Iraq in 2003, the most used terms in the country are likely "political consensus," "consensual democracy" and "consensual decision." However, failures on all levels are often attributed to the lack of consensus, as some believe that achieving consensus in Iraq has become impossible and that division is inevitable.

One can say that the lack of consensus between different Iraqi parties and …

During the last week of 2014, Al-Azhar’s Grand Imam Ahmed al-Tayeb demanded that Shiite authorities in Iran and Iraq issue clear fatwas strictly forbidding the insulting of Sunni figures and their sanctities. This happened during the visit of Mahmoud Mahmoudian, the new head of Iran’s Interest Desk in Egypt.

Tayeb called on Muslim scholars to “avoid strife between Sunnis and Shiites, as it is tearing the Islamic …

The Kurds came out and said it directly - they want foreign boots on the ground
Sat Jan 24, 2015 2:00 pm by Cascadian
Kurdish officials in Iraq have called on the US-led coalition to expand its aerial bombing campaign and send soldiers to help combat the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).

Masrour Barzani, the chancellor of Kurdistan's regional security, told Al Jazeera that the Kurds needed 'boots on the ground' in the fight against ISIL.

"I believe there has to be a way to bring more forces on the ground and not only depend on air strikes," Barzani said.

Kurdish peshmerga divisions hamper war effort
Sat Jan 24, 2015 9:08 pm by Kevind53
I found the title of this a little misleading. It's not a question of the Kurds being unwilling to fight, but rather a lack of co-ordination between the major factions in the fight. Though they have come together to fight their common enemy, there is no centralized command to co-ordinate the two major groups.

Islamic State lose only one per cent of captured territory in Iraq after airstrikes
Sat Jan 24, 2015 8:01 pm by Cascadian
Islamic State jihadists have lost only a tiny fraction of captured territory in Iraq after five months of US-led air strikes, the Pentagon said Friday.

Kurdish peshmerga forces and Iraqi government troops have retaken 270 square miles of ground mostly in northern Iraq, but the IS group still holds 30,000 square miles, spokesman Rear Admiral John Kirby told reporters.

That amounts to roughly one percent of IS-held territory changing hands since the US launched air raids in Iraq on August 8.
